How To Store Bulk Fly Ash By Fly Ash Storage Silo

Fly ash is the fine ash in flue gas produced by coal combustion. It features a smooth surface and fine micropore, mainly composed of silica, aluminum oxide, iron oxide, calcium oxide, magnesium oxide, sulfur trioxide, and other components.
Every year, after coal-fired power generation, a large number of wastes are discharged from the power plant, such as fly ash, desulfurization gypsum, and boiler slag, of which fly ash accounts for about 80%. For power plants, fly ash is a type of waste, but for cement plant, mixing plant, and other enterprises, it can be used as raw material for production. It not only reduces the production cost but also brings benefits to environmental protection.
How to properly store bulk fly ash? It is an important question for power plants and many enterprises that use fly ash as raw material because once stored improperly, fly ash will be affected by moisture, resulting in caking, strength reduction, and even can’t be used. Besides, fly ash has an impact on the environment, such as causing dust pollution and water pollution. Therefore, we should choose a safe storage method.

Fly Ash Storage Method

Fly ash storage methods include bulk storage, bag storage, and silo storage. The storage time of fly ash should not be too long, the longer the storage time, the greater the strength reduction. Under normal conditions, the strength of fly ash will decrease about 10%~20% after stored for 3 months.
Bulk Storage
Fly ash bulk storage refers to stacking fly ash in a warehouse or open area. When storing in the warehouse, we should keep the indoor dry and prevent water leakage. When storing in the open air, we should take rainproof measures and lay linoleum or tarpaulin below.
Bag Storage
Fly ash bag storage means the fly ash is packed in bags first and then stacked in warehouses. The warehouse shall keep dry and lay with a base plate that is not less than 300mm above the ground. The stacking point is not less than 300mm from the wall around and the stacking height is generally no more than 10 bags.
Silo Storage
Fly ash silo storage is to store fly ash in closed fly ash storage silos. The silo is usually constructed by steel plate and equipped with different types of devices for realizing automatic loading and unloading, temperature control, ventilation, etc.
At present, more and more enterprises use fly ash silo to store bulk fly ash, because of its large capacity, small space occupation, safe storage, and a high degree of automation. To a great extent, it meets the factory's demand for mechanization and automation.

How to Store Fly Ash by Fly Ash Storage Silo

In the fly ash silo storage system, fly ash storage silo is the key equipment. We usually adopt floor-type fully enclosed steel silos. Besides, the lifting equipment, conveying equipment, dust removal equipment, temperature control system, and other ancillary equipment are also indispensable.
Fly Ash Feeding
There are two feeding methods for large fly ash silos.
  1. Install a single silo pump under the electrostatic precipitator and directly send fly ash into the silo through the pneumatic conveying pipeline. This method mostly adopts a screw air compressor as the air source. The conveying distance is within 1500m and the conveying height can reach more than 30m.
  2. Feed fly ash into the fly ash silo by automobile pump. In this method, the vehicle-mounted air compressor is used as the air source.
Fly Ash Discharging
The bottom of the fly ash silo is a concave structure, which makes the inclined plane of the silo bottom form an angle of 170 degrees with the horizontal plane. In the center of the silo bottom, a decompression cone is mounted. A pneumatic device, a material transmitter, and a vertical discharge pipe are respectively installed at the bottom, the side, and the top of the decompression cone. According to different diameters, the fly ash silo bottom can be divided into more than 50 discharge zones. These zones can be subdivided into outer and inner zones. In outer zones, a material guide cone is arranged between each two guide troughs to form a V-shaped discharging unit. When we send gas to a certain discharge zone, the material in this zone will flow and get into the decompression cone through the guide pipe. In the decompression cone, materials are mixed and injected into the conveying pipeline to get out of the silo by the transmitter.
